Steelers Baseball Team Opens Season 2-0 in Orlando

The Lackawanna Varsity Baseball team recently traveled to Orlando, Florida, where they stayed at Universal Studios Cabana Bay Beach Resort for four nights and played two games and practiced through KSA Events (Kaylee Scholarship Association).

The team enjoyed three days at the parks, among other perks giving to them by KSA Events. Players and their families fundraised for over a year, with much help from local businesses/patrons to make this dream a reality.

The team would like to thank and acknowledge the following local businesses/patrons for their donations and support: Mulberry Italian Restaurant, Robman Construction, Ventura's CarStar Collision, Lackawanna Grove, Mayor Szymanski, TRS Heating and Cooling, Lackawanna DPW, The Mess Hall, Mucci Collision, McKesson, Lackawanna PBA, Ken Szyszkowski, Lackawanna Fire Department, Red Robin, Ilio DiPaolo's, John Gentile and Pat's Drive In.

Game 1 vs. Heritage Christian (Kissimmee, Florida)

The team opened its season defeating Christian Heritage from Kissimmee, Florida by a score of 17-4.

The teams each scored a run in the first inning. The Steelers got on the board when Danny Elvers hit a double and scored on a passed ball. The team took a 4-1 lead after two innings, getting runs when Matt Rodriguez walked, Andrew Sarick singled, and Alec Sweet walked and scored on an Alex Rodriguez double.

After giving up two runs in the top of the third, the Steelers busted the game open with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Matt Rodriguez singled, Andrew Sarick doubled, and Alec Sweet walked, with Alex Rodriguez following with a two-run single. Elvers followed up with an RBI double, and Eddy Bender knocked in two of his four RBIs on a double.

The team then scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Alec Sweet, Alex Rodriguez, Danny Elvers, Matt Rodriguez, and RBI walks by Eddy Bender, Cris Swiatek and Tyree Wallace. Cris Swiatek got the win on the mound, throwing four strong innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven. Alex Rodriguez pitched the last inning for the save. Alex had five RBIs on the day and Eddy Bender had four.

Game 2 vs. Oratory Prep (New Jersey)

The Steelers beat a well-respected private school, Oratory Prep (New Jersey) in their second game in Orlando.

It was Danny Elvers pitching five strong innings, striking out eight and walking none. Alex Rodriguez pitched the final two innings for his second save in as many days. After falling behind early 2-0, the Steelers tied the game with two runs in the second inning, when Cris Swiatek and Andrew Sarick both walked and scored on a double by eighth-grader Matt Rodriguez and a sac fly by Drew Kowalski.

The team took the lead in the third when Alex singled and scored on a sac fly by Cris Swiatek. The Steelers pulled away in the fourth when Danny Elvers hit a two-run double, then scored on a Zach Plehinger single. Alex Rodriguez had a bases-loaded clearing triple that scored three runs, giving him nine RBIs in two games.

For the Florida trip as a whole, Alex went 6 for 8, Danny Elvers 4 for 5, Eddy Bender four RBIs and Matt Rodriguez went 4 for 5 to lead the Steeler offense.

Team To Play at Coca-Cola Field April 23

The team will play at Coca-Cola Field in downtown Buffalo on Monday, April 23 at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. The team will play a non-league game vs. host South Park Sparks. Please come out and support the team!
