Black History Month Celebrations
On Thursday, February 29, 2024, the students at Truman Elementary School gathered for grade level assemblies where each class presented facts and celebrated influential African Americans from the past and present. The class presentations included interesting information about the contributions made by those including, but not limited to:
George Washington Carver, scientist responsible for finding different ways to use peanuts (in crops and shampoo!) but he did not invent peanut butter.
Dr. Mae Jemison, NASA astronaut who was the first African American woman to go to space.
Michael Jackson, singer, song writer and dancer who is known as “The King of Pop.”
George Crum, credited for inventing the Saratoga potato chip.
Simone Biles, gymnast who won the most gold medals at a single Olympics Games.
Garret Morgan, created early versions of the traffic light.
Madam Walker, the first African American female self-made millionaire for her line of hair care products.
Maya Angelou, an author, poet and civil rights activist.
Alfred Cralle, invented the ice cream scooper.
Ruby Bridges, the first African American child to attend and desegregate William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana.
...and the list goes on!
We also want to thank Mrs. Nadine Noman and Mrs. Meagan Bender for coordinating an opportunity for our Lackawanna High School students to come to Truman Elementary School to read books about influential African Americans to our Kindergarten students. Lastly, a thank you to Mrs. Rivera, Truman’s social worker for leading SEL lessons for our Grade 1 students using Todd Parr’s children’s books, It’s OK to be Different and Be Who You Are.
The students made crafts, learned songs and even participated in public speaking as part of the presentations. Thank you to our talented Truman teachers for your dedication to teaching our students about the wonderful and talented people in the world. Most importantly, by working in a collaborative manner and taking collective responsibility as a professional learning community, our youngest students can envision how they too can change the world and become the next scientists, doctors, astronauts, singers, entrepreneurs, inventors, authors and teachers!
Memorable Moments
Thank you to Mrs. K, our math teacher for making the 100th day of school packed with so many fun learning activities that focused on counting and using math for real world purposes. The trail mix making was a student favorite. Several classroom teachers and students also dressed up as if they were 100 years old and it was hard to tell who was who!
