May Truman Times
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Author Visit with Amy Ludwig Vanderwater at Truman Elementary School
Amy is a children's writer - and our near-neighbor - living in Holland, NY. Thanks to our Truman Librarian, Mrs. Conover Wentland, she coordinated for Amy to visit our school as a guest Author. This was Truman’s first official Author visit and it was a huge success! Prior to her visit, Amy shared the following information with the Truman Faculty so they could prepare the students for the visit.
From Amy Ludwig Vanderwater:
I have been teaching about writing for a long time and share hundreds of free and ad-free lessons and videos at my website and blogs. I welcome you to visit my blog The Poem Farm where I post poems and writing ideas. Each of my posts in that ad-free space speaks directly to children, and I have been writing there since 2010, most Fridays and every day each April (National Poetry Month). Last April, I posted a daily poem about our old barn throughout the course of one full day. This winter I have been posting short and friendly videos about writing poetry. Six of ten are complete, and I'll continue them this Friday. You can find these in the left sidebar of The Poem Farm.
You can find my books in the library, and there are resources and guides to go with most of them here at my website. Here is a video of me reading my newest book, THE SOUND OF KINDNESS.
My hope is that our time together will help your young students understand a little bit more how anyone can be a writer...and that much of writing is paying attention and caring about the world. I look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you in advance for having me!
Peace, Amy
Again, thank you to Mrs. Conover-Wentland for coordinating this event. It was inspiring and enriching for all in attendance, children and adults alike!
School Safety Update
The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priorities. Here are some recent steps we have taken to enhance safety at Truman Elementary School:
Safety Drills: Truman students practiced a Lock Down Drill on
Thursday, April 11, 2024, These drills help prepare our staff and students act swiftly and safely in emergency situations.
Safety Assemblies: All Truman students participated in a Safety Assembly on Friday. April 12, 2024, which was led by Officer Kwiatkowski. He reviewed the success of the Lock Down drill practiced the day before. The students and staff had the opportunity to debrief what the drill entailed and why we practiced it. Officer Kwiatkowski’s message of “Be Prepared, Not Scared” continues to drive our conversations and actions at Truman. Additionally, a group of Grade 1 students role played what to do and what not to do during a Lock Down drill.
Partnership with Local Authorities and NYS Troopers: We continue to strengthen our collaboration with local law enforcement and the New York State Troopers to ensure a rapid response in case of emergencies and to provide regular security assessments of our facilities. NYS Trooper Joe Wilkinson and his colleagues will host another Safety Assembly for our students and staff on May 30, 2024
We are committed to maintaining a secure environment for our students and will continue to keep you informed. In other news, it’s been a great start to the month of May at Truman. Below is a recap of some of the highlights.
